Conway was born on September 15, 1961, in Columbia, South Carolina, USA. While little is known about Eustace’s boyhood, it is known that at the age of 17, he fled home to live in a tipi in the woods. He later trekked the entire Appalachian Trail before graduating from Appalachian State University with a degree in anthropology and English. He later claimed to have set a world record for riding a horse across the United States on a journey from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Several media then challenged the claims, claiming that the record was set by Bud and Temple Abernathy, aged 11 and 7 at the time, on a 62-day trek from New York City to San Francisco, which was recounted in the book “Bud & Me.”

In a segment called “Adventures in Simple Life,” which began airing in 1998, a weekly show called “This American Life” provided insight into Eustace’s travels. Episodes of the show included audio that was made on a recorder that he and his party of tourists carried.

Conway played the naturalist, and the documentary also featured a biologist, poet, and historian.

The show centers on him and his Turtle Island property in North Carolina are the Blue Ridge Mountains. There have been various death rumors surrounding Eustace during his life, however, they have all been proven false, as the death reported on one occasion was really that of Eustace’s father, Eustace Robinson Conway III. Preston Roberts, a close friend of his, died in 2017 after a long struggle with cancer after it was discovered that he had an inoperable tumor in his liver.
