Bob Dylan is an American singer-songwriter who was born on May 24, 1941, as Robert Allen Zimmerman. Many people see him as one of the best songwriters of all time.

His maternal grandparents, Florence and Ben Stone, were Lithuanian Jews who came to the United States in 1902. Dylan stated in Chronicles: Volume One that his paternal grandmother’s family was from the Kazman district of Kars Province in northern Turkey.

In 1911, Abraham Zimmerman known as Abe Zimmerman was born. He was peddling newspapers and shining shoes by the age of seven to help support his family.

Despite his short stature and glasses, Abe was a physically active young man. He was also a musician, and his children created a small band. “Abe was a violinist.

Beatty Zimmerman

Bob Dylan’s mother, Beatrice Stone also known as Beatty was from a prominent Jewish family in the Iron Range town of Hibbing.

Benjamin and Lybba Edelstein, her maternal grandparents, were Lithuanian Jews who emigrated to America with their children in 1902 and settled in Hibbing two years later. Her grandpa, B. H., owned a chain of movie theaters.

Florence, B. H.’s eldest daughter, married Ben Stone, who was also born in Lithuania, and they opened a clothes business in Hibbing, selling to the families of miners, the majority of whom were also immigrants.

Beatty was the second of Ben and Florence’s four children, born in 1915. Vernon, Lewis, and Irene were her siblings.

The Stones, like the Zimmermans, were a musical family, and Beatty learned to play the piano.

Abe and Beatrice Zimmerman lived in Duluth for 14 years before relocating to Hibbing when Bob was six years old and David was two years old.

In 1968, Abe Zimmerman died after an apparent heart attack in Minnesota. Beatrice afterward married St. Paul’s Joe Rutman, who died in 1985.
